EMS Provider Levels

CPR Driver

CPR Drivers are providers who have obtained their American Heart Association CPR Certification. They are able to operate a Basic Life Support Ambulance to assist ambulance crews.

AEMT

Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians are nationally registered care providers who are trained at an advanced care level compared to EMTs. The scope of practice varies across different states, but this provider level can commonly start IVs and work with more medications.

EMR

An Emergency Medical Responder is a nationally registered care provider who completed an EMR program. Programs range between 40 and 60 hours of classroom and hands on work. EMRs are able to operate Basic Life Support ambulances and assist with Basic Life Support Care. Skillset includes performing CPR, immobilization techniques, and some medications.

Paramedic

The Paramedic level is the highest care provider level in EMS healthcare. They are nationally registered providers who successfully completed an accredited Paramedic program. They can manually interpret cardiac rhythms, start IVs, work with a wide range of medications, and perform endotracheal intubations.

EMT

Emergency Medical Technicians are nationally registered EMS providers who have completed an EMT program. These programs come in many options, such as academy style programs or more traditional programs. EMTs can lead care in a Basic Life Support ambulance or assist in an Advanced Life Support ambulance. Skillset includes performing CPR, working with advanced airway devices, and handling some medications.

EMS Educator

EMS educators are vital in bringing high level EMS education to our communities. The best way to be proficient in our abilities, is to teach it to others. Adjunct instructors can assist with courses. Lead instructors must obtain their DOT certification and teach 51% of EMS programs.
